This site has been developed to present a balanced argument as to why the proposed Grovewood Eco-town should not be constructed in the suggested location, indeed there are many areas and sites that would benefit from such a development but this is not one of them!

The long wait is over and the Government has joined our campaign by saying NO! to Grovewood.

We owe thanks to all of you who have supported us over the long months of the winter, who have given their time, money and expertise to fight Banks' proposal and we are delighted that common sense has prevailed and the National Forest site is safe.

We shall remain vigilant and continue to oppose any revised attempt to resurrect the Grovewood proposal. Sharks, after all, don't sleep!

Five Members of the Grovewood Opposition Group Committee took the Heart of the National Forest to the Heart of the Government when they went with Mark Todd, MP for South Derbyshire to No.10 Downing Street on Thursday January 17th 2008, to hand in the paper petition and the document detailing the initial objections to the Eco Town Proposal.

Our research has thrown up some interesting endorsements for our objections presented to Downing Street on the 17th January 2008:

Gordon Brown - July 2007
“I want us, in environmentally friendly ways, using brownfield land and building eco-towns and villages to meet housing needs by building over 250,000 more homes than previously planned.”

Yvette Cooper – March 2007
“New eco-towns… would make the best use of brownfield land and could be built on public sector surplus land such as former MOD or NHS sites.”

Baroness Andrews – December 2007
“We have already received 50 applications for eco-towns from all regions. Most of the bids are for towns on brownfield sites.”

Eco-towns Prospectus – July 2007
“Wherever there are good opportunities to do so, schemes should make use of suitable surplus public sector land, or brownfield land,”

So there’s a consensus. The Government’s preferred option is brownfield development for eco-towns. Grovewood is not only a previously undeveloped, Greenfield site but it is also in the heart of the National Forest!
